What is Success for Me as a Parent?

Cleaning windows of their own volition! Hallelujah!

“No success without a successor.” Peter Drucker

Mr. Drucker paraphrased the book of Ecclesiastes well.

“I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.” Ecclesiastes 1:14

Begs the question, “Who am I pouring into?”

Sister love in the park.

For me the answer is easy: my children.

I pray I equip them with the skills necessary to succeed in life-and that’s a whole lot more than just financial success.

I want to train them up to relate to themselves and others in a healthy way. I feel like my main action step in achieving that outcome is to help them understand who they are in Christ and to do life from that place.

  • Who cares in you’re #1 in your company if every time you look in the mirror you only see a fraud and a poser?
  • Who cares if you have more stuff than all your family/friends if there’s no peace in your home? You’re just a hoarder.
  • What accolade could take the place of a vibrant, loving relationship with your spouse and children?

All of these issues are major reasons we need to be doing life in community with other people who share our values. We must have a safe place where we can be authentic about what we like and don’t like about ourselves. A place where we can be vulnerable and find support and healing. For us, that’s in our Life Groups at church.

We need to model these types of relationships for our own sanity and well-being, but our children NEED to see us living this way so they don’t shame themselves when they begin to deal with difficult emotions.

No apple too large!

I want my children to be risk-takers who follow the dreams God places in their heart.

One way I can model this for them is to dare greatly myself. I love Dr. Brene Brown’s words on the matter:

We dare greatly when we challenge the cultural climate of scarcity. The opposite of scarcity is not abundance. It’s “enough” and wholeheartedness.

Again, we may ask, “HOW exactly do I DO this?”

Simple.

Believe who we are in Christ.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid to fail?
